History of Syngenta Seeds, Inc.
|
Syngenta
Seeds, Inc., marketer of NK® brand field crops seeds, is a leading research
organization that develops genetics and value-added products, and produces and
sells corn, soybean, alfalfa, wheat, sunflower, sugar beets, vegetable and
flower seeds. The company was created in November 2000 with the launch of its
parent company, Syngenta Corporation.
Although Syngenta is a brand-new company, we have a long
and impressive history. In fact, our roots trace as far back as 1758 when
Johann Rudolf Geigy-Gemuseus opened a chemical business in Basel, Switzerland.
Syngenta
was formed via the spin-off and subsequent merger of Zeneca Agrochemicals, a
unit of Astra-Zeneca Corporation, and the agribusiness units -- seeds and crop
protection -- of Novartis AG. Novartis Seeds, the predecessor of Syngenta
Seeds, Inc. was a wholly owned subsidiary of Novartis AG, which had been
created in January, 1997, from the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz AG, two
rival chemical and pharmaceutical companies located across the river from one
another in Basel, Switzerland. The seed divisions from each company, Ciba
Seeds and Northrup
King Co., respectively, merged to create Novartis Seeds.
Syngenta’s
heritage is formed from the innovations and skills of Novartis and Zeneca, two
of the leading names in the agribusiness industry. Syngenta's depth of
experience and knowledge, firmly position us as the new global leader in
providing innovative solutions and brands to growers and the food and feed
chain.
In
addition to the NK® brand field crops, the company markets products under three
other brands worldwide, including Rogers® (vegetables), Hilleshög® (sugar
beets) and S&G® (flowers). The field crops sector has its headquarters in
Golden Valley, Minn., along with the corporate headquarters for Syngenta Seeds,
Inc.
