Coker Pedigreed Seed Co. History |
In 1902, the Coker family started a cotton seed company in Hartsville, South Carolina. Later, the company would market wheat, oats, corn, soybean and tobacco seeds. The corn products were so successful that at one point in the 1960s, the company estimated that it had 25 percent of the corn market share.
Kleinwanzlebener Saatzucht Ag (KWS), a German company, purchased Coker Seed Co. in 1978. KWS consolidated the corn research, but Coker continued to produce and sell seed corn until 1988. The company's assets were then sold to Northrup King Co. later that year.
