Pride Co., Inc. History
In 1934, Dick Metcalf started a seed company called Pride Co., Inc., in Glen Haven, Wisconsin. The small company sold corn, soybean, sorghum, grass and alfalfa seed. Pride originally had production facilities in four locations, including the Glen Haven, Wisc. site; DeWitt, Iowa; Amboy, Minn.; and Chatham, Ontario, Canada. The company's market was in the Midwestern United States, including Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin. The company also distributed some seed to the northeastern United States and some parts of Canada.
Northrup, King & Co. purchased Pride Co. in 1965, maintaining separate brands and operations until 1987. Later, Northrup, King & Co. was purchased by Sandoz Ltd. of Basel, Switerland. Then in 1997, Sandoz AG and Ciba-Geigy merged to form Novartis AG.
