Plant to Plant Spacings For Various Plant Populations

In the ongoing quest for higher yields and profits per acre, narrow rows are considered to be one of the more predictable crop management tools which can improve profitability. Higher yields are a function of better inter-plant spacing which reduces competition for sunlight, soil moisture and plant nutrients. One of the keys to make narrow rows profitable is to calibrate the planter to uniformly space the seeds in the row.

To determine the inches between kernels given the seeds per acre and row size, enter the following:

Seeds per Acre:
Row Size:

New row widths commonly considered:

22 inch - Commonly used row width for sugar beet farmers who plant all their row crops on one uniform row width.

20 inch - a row width that machinery companies have built in to row crop machinery.

15 inch - modification of 30 inch row machinery is possible.

This calculator can be useful as you determine the appropriate plant density and planter calibration for different row width systems. Once you have determined the population range that you desire in each field, then refer to your planter manual and set your planter to the closest setting possible.
